Two artists, a wood carver and a painter, wanted to reinvent their two-story house as a showcase for their works, creating a highly individualized space in which life and art are one.

To foreground the free-standing wood sculptures and the large and small canvases, our design opened up the plan by removing as many partitions as possible. The defining gesture is an unexpected, two-story atrium, framed on one side by windows, which dramatizes the space and frames a holistic environment. An open staircase doubles as another wood sculpture and leads to the arcade gallery and a commanding view of all the objects. Discrete lighting and minimalist fixtures illuminate the art as well as the household’s everyday activities.
